Bhubaneswar, May 13 (LocalWire): Naveen Patnaik on Monday urged the Centre to sanction at least five lakh PMAY (G) Special houses to rehabilitate the victims of Cyclone Fani.
In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Patnaik thanked the Union government for the support rendered to the state to effectively manage Fani and its aftermath.
Patnaik wrote, ‘According to preliminary estimates, about five lakh houses have been completely or substantially damaged across 14 districts with major loss occurring at Puri district due to Fani.’
CM cited that the Prime Minister had personally witnessed the damage to the cyclone-affected areas during his visit to the state on 6 May.
He was also apprised about the extent of damage and the dire need to build disaster-resilient housing along the coastal belt of Odisha, which is vulnerable to cyclonic storms.
Patnaik reiterated to waive the Permanent Wait List criterion for this particular allocation and also consider a Centre-State fund sharing pattern of 90:10 as a special case.
The chief minister also apprised Modi that the state government is undertaking a detailed house damage assessment which would be completed shortly.
The exact number of houses damaged completely or substantially will be found out after the survey.
Patnaik also added, ‘monsoon is fast approaching and is likely to reach the state around 10 June.
Keeping in view the urgency to provide pucca houses to the affected, we are going ahead with issuing work orders from 1 June in anticipation of the approval of our proposal by Government of India.’
