Kendrapara, June 2 (LocalWire): With the monsoon season just around the corner, panic has gripped the riverside villages of the Kendrapara district owing to the damaged and deteriorated state of the river embankments.
Many riverside villages face the onslaught of floods every year during the monsoon season.
The floodwater devours large tracts of agricultural land, causing huge losses to farmers.
“The river embankments in Aul, Rajkanika, Rajnagar and Mahakalapada areas of the district have not been repaired by the irrigation department; this endangers a large number of riverside villages in these areas,” alleged Alekha Jena, BJP leader and former MLA from Rajnagar.
“During the last election, sundry leaders of political parties assured us of stone-packing the river embankments at Gobindapur village.
However, no work has been done by the authorities for which we are worried about the approaching monsoons,” said Gajendra Parida of Gobindapur in Aul.
“Many farmers of the riverside villages of these areas have been losing their lands, houses and orchards as the river Bramahani is marching towards the villages due to non-construction of stone-pack embankments,” said Ratnakar Patra of Manikapatana village.
The rivers Brahmani, Kharosrota and Kani have already devoured large tracts of land and the houses of many villagers of Patrapur, Narendrapur, Manikaptana, Badaambila, Atala, Kolidiha, Jamudanda, Bijayanagar, Diniari, Ichapur, Taladiha, Badaambila, Dasipur, Narendrapur, Padanipala, Gobindapur and other villages by displacing around 400 families.
“The river Kani has engulfed 10 gunths of my land, for which I am a landless person now. The river will devour my house within five years,” said Ranjan Samal of Ichapur village.
When contacted, Samarth Verma, the collector of Kendrapara said, “We have organized District Level Natural Calamity meeting on Monday to chalk out plans for the repair of the river embankments and to protect the riverside villagers during floods.
All the river embankments will be properly repaired soon”.
