Bhubaneswar, June 10 (LocalWire): The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has now asked the Odisha government to inspect affected sites in Balasore district to examine allegations of illegal sand mining.
In an application to the NGT it was alleged that some erring sand miners are extracting sand illegally from the Subranarekha river and flouting several environmental and mining laws.
“…we deem it essential to constitute a Committee comprising -District Magistrate, Balasore, the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA), the Odisha Pollution Control Board (State PCB) and, Regional Office of the Environment Ministry,’” the NGT order said.
It also added, “They shall jointly inspect the area in question, verify on the factual aspects set out by the applicant.
The State Pollution Control Board shall be the nodal agency for coordination and for providing logistic support.”
The NGT has asked to complete the inspection within 15 days and take action against the miners if found guilty.
A plea in the NGT earlier had claimed that more the permitted sand are mined, machines are used despite its prohibition, sand carrying trucks causing pollution in local areas and flouting of several other rules.
