Bhubaneswar, December 5 (LocalWire): Forest department officials have taken into custody nine fishermen for fishing in the prohibited Gahirmatha marine sanctuary area.
The patrolling unit engaged by forest department intercepted the fishermen mid-sea in the prohibited marine sanctuary area near Hukitola coast and seized their fishing trawl, as well as over 20 quintal sea fish catch from the impounded vessel.
Prohibition on sea fishing remains enforced round the year within the marine sanctuary limits, while sea patrolling is stepped up within the Gahirmatha marine sanctuary water territory during November-May every year in view of the annual mass nesting season of endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles.
The arrested fishermen are natives of fishing villages of Kendrapara district, a forest department official stated.
The fishing vessel had trespassed into prohibited sanctuary corridors contravening the provisions of wildlife protection act, Orissa Marine fishing regulation act and mandatory rules of the marine sanctuary.
The arrested fishermen were later sent to jail custody under sections 27 and 29 of the provisions of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and Orissa Marine Fishing Regulation Act, 1982, forest department sources said.
