Berhampur, July 27 (LocalWire): The local police on Saturday arrested nine persons, including two from Uttar Pradesh for illegal transportation of cattle in a truck near Khallikote in Ganjam district, about 50-km from here.
The seven other accused are from Sakhigopal in Puri district, police said.
“As many as 17 cattle loaded in the vehicle were rescued and the animals were handed over to the representatives of the non-government organisation People for Animals in Bhubaneswar,” the Khallikote Police Station inspector in charge Sunil Kumar Behera informed.
He further informed that the accused persons would be presented at the court after questioning.
While the accused persons did not disclose from where they had procured the animals, they informed that the cattle were being taken to Andhra Pradesh.
Acting on a tip-off about the transportation of cattle in a truck on National Highway 16, the police chased the truck and caught it near Khallikote, the officer said adding that they are still interrogating the arrested persons.
“We are also verifying the registration number of vehicles, as it has different registration numbers on front and back,” he said.
