Berhampur: Dec 29 (LocalWire) An engineer who had embarked on a nine-day bicycle expedition from the port town of Paradeep to raise environmental awareness among the people, culminated his journey here on Sunday.
44-year-old Amaresh Naresh Samant, an electric engineer had started his journey on December 21.
He pedalled over 700-km and during his nine-day journey, interacted with a cross-section of people including activists, students, in eight districts.
Different organizations here, particularly those working for the protection of the environment felicitated Samant at a function organised by the residents at the local stadium.
Divisional forest officer (DFO) Amlan Patra, environmentalist Sudhir Rout, eco-club co-coordinator SN Bez and activists of Sabuj Bahini among others who attended the function.
“The main objective of my cycling was to motivate people so that they plant more trees”, said Samant.
“We are facing the wrath of cyclone more and more due to the loss of green cover” he added.
Samant, a bachelor says he has planned to carry out similar trips to cover all the coastal areas of the state in the days to come to deliver the same message.
He has been working for the protection of the environment for the last two decades. He spent a major portion of his salary in such work.
