Berhampur, September 5 (LocalWire): She retired nine years ago, but sixty-eight-year-old Sukanti Sahu of Polasara in Ganjam district has refused to give up her profession, teaching the students and has continued to teach at the Lingaraj Girls’ High School.
On the occasion of Teachers’ Day over 380 students of the school greeted her as she is the oldest teacher in the school at present.
Sahu takes at least three to four science classes every day for VI, VII and VIII, as well as substitutes for any absent teacher.
“Earlier, I used to take six to seven classes every day, but after my heart problem, I take only three to four classes,” she said.
Sahu, however, does not take any remuneration from the government for taking the classes like other guest teachers, engaged by the government.
“I have given an undertaking to the school authorities to teach the students without taking any fee,” she stated.
“All of my children are established, and hence, I have no burden. Moreover, my interest lies in teaching and so I come to the school to take the classes. School teachers also cooperate with me,” she said.
Describing teaching is a noble profession, Sahu said that she wants to continue teaching as long as her health permits.
Sahu had retired as a teacher for Ex-Board Girls’ Primary School, Polasara in February 2010 and applied for a guest teacher to teach the students in the month of October, the same year, following a government advertisement for it.
“I was engaged in the Lingaraj Girls’ High School to teach the students,” she said.
“She comes to school regularly and takes classes. Due to her voluntarily service, we are able to somehow tide over the shortage of the teachers,” said in-charge headmistress of the school Sangeeta Sahu, adding that the school has only five regular teachers to teach five classes from VI to X with student strength of 383.
“When a teacher for the Class VI to VIII left the school on promotion, we had no teacher for these classes. Sahu along with the high school teachers managed the classes,” Sangeet said.
