Koraput, March 16 (LocalWire): The district administration has decided to replace the old kerosene lamps with modern LED lanterns to light up poll booths after darkness.
“LED lanterns give better lighting with zero maintenance. Therefore, we have decided to provide this lantern to each poll team,” Koraput collector K. Sudarshan Chakravarthy said.
Such lamps will be provided to all 1,141 booths in the district for the April 11 elections.
In the past, the traditional hurricane lanterns were used in elections.
Poll officials, meanwhile, have welcomed the move.
“Old lanterns had the hassle of pouring kerosene and lighting up. Now that’s over,” said an official, requesting anonymity.
In un-electrified areas of the state, the kerosene lamp is still widely used in people’s homes.
The collector, however, said: “Though over 90 percent of our booths are electrified, the rest would be covered before polls.”
