Bhubaneswar, Jan 26 (LocalWire) The International Conference on Thunderstorm and Lightning in Tropics (ICTLT) said about one-fourth of the lightning deaths in India are reported from Odisha.
The conference recommended setting up of a ‘Lightning and Thunderstorm Centre’ in the state jointly by the Ministry of Earth Science and the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA).
The three-day conference was recently organised by the Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) of the Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SoA) Deemed to be University and the OSDMA and was attended by over 200 scientists, researchers, meteorologists and experts.
Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) and OSDMA Managing Director Bishnupada Sethi said the panel felt the need of developing Early Warning System (EWS) for people residing in areas vulnerable to thunderstorm and lightning by using mobile network, media and siren.
Sethi said to make school children aware of lightning and thunderstorm, all school bags and the back page of text books should carry a list of “dos and don’ts” in times of such incidents.
