Bhubaneswar, Oct 6 (LocalWire): The Odisha Assembly Wednesday passed the Odisha Universities (Amendment) Bill 2020 amid outrage from the opposition parties.
The Congress party and the BJP had been opposing the bill citing them as a threat to the autonomy of the functioning of the universities in the state.
The bill was passed after a few days of debate in the House.
Congress party leader Narasingha Mishra called Tuesday as a Black Day for the House for passing such a bill.
“This bill aims to kill the autonomy of the universities. This is anti-Constitutional and anti-tradition,” he said.
BJP MLA Jaya Narayan Mishra said that with the provisions of the new bill the universities would now be bent towards the government for very basic approvals leading to hampering of the academics and research works.
The State Higher Education Minister however defended the bill and said that it was aimed to streamline the functioning of the universities.
The bill aims to increase tenure of the Vice Chancellors, abolition of the Senate and recruitment of teachers through the Odisha Public Service Commission.
