Kendrapara. Jan 3 (LocalWire) The death toll in Kendrapara boat tragedy rose to 9 on Thursday, said officials.
According to officials, rescue teams have fished out nine bodies, including seven children and two women, so far.
The deceased have been identified as Pravati Swain (36), Anu Tarai (30), Sai Tara (4), Debasis Sahoo (10), Debasmita Sahoo (6), Rojalin Sahoo (14), Dhuna Sahoo (14), Shushree Pallavi Swain (5) and Ishan Dalai (3).
All deceased, except Ishan Dalai, were residents of Hasina village at Mangarajpur Gram Panchayat under Kujanga block. Ishan was a resident of Gandikipur.
One child, Shubhashree Swain (6), is still missing.
A boat with 55 people capsized in Mahanadi river at 6.20 pm on Wednesday at Sananipanianear Barkolikhala in Batighar Gram Panchayat of Kendrapara district.
The passengers were returning from a picnic at Light House of Hukitola island when the mishap occurred.
Rescue teams, including fire brigade personnel, Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) officials and coast guards, carried out operations till 3 am on Thursday.
Out of 55 passengers, 45 are safe, said rescuers.
Meanwhile, the bodies of the nine deceased will be brought to Chaumuhana in Paradip and will later be sent for autopsy.
Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to next of kin of all nine deceased, along with free medical treatment to the injured.
