Bhubaneswar, Sept 2 (LocalWire): The State Cabinet today passed a resolution to request the Union government to grant classical tag to Odissi music.
Briefing the media on the issue, the State Culture Minister Ashok Panigrahi said that the Odissi music is different from other forms of classic music and the state had recognised Odissi as a classical form of music in 2008.
He also said that other decisions were also taken in the Cabinet meeting for the department.
“It is proposed that for proper functioning of the Odisha State Archaeology, a separate and autonomous Directorate shall be formed and the post of a Director shall be created for this purpose,” the minister said.
He also said that the Cabinet approved to create a separate and autonomous directorate for the Odisha State Museum and create the post of Director for the same. It was also decided to develop the museum into a virtual entity.
A decision was also taken to increase the award money for artists for the state awards like Atibadi Jagannath Das Samman, Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja Samman, Dharmapada Samman and Byasakabi Phakir Mohan Samman from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh.
It also said that the amounts for awards of the various Academies shall be increased from Rs 50, 000 to Rs 2 lakh and the amount of felicitations of the various Academies shall be increased to Rs 1 lakh.
The Cabinet also decided to fill up the vacancies in the culture department and allowed the same even through the nomination process.
The Cabinet has also decided to develop the birthplace of Pandit Gopanbandhu Das with a budget of Rs 11 crore.
