Bhubaneswar/Gopalpur, Feb 28 (LocalWire): Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday dedicated an upgraded facility of the Gopalpur Port in Ganjam district to the nation, and said it will bring a “strategic shift” in cargo movement on the country’s east coast.
“This port will provide significant economic benefits to Ganjam district and will create direct and indirect employment for over 6,500 people,” he said at a function held on the occasion, some 30 km from here.
“It will also play a crucial role in economic development of Odisha, especially the southern districts of the state,” he added.
Commerce and Transport Minister Dr. Nrusingha Charan Sahu, Gopalpur MLA Dr. Pradeep Panigraphi and Chattrapur MLA Dr. Priyanshu Pradhan, among other dignitaries were also present on the occassion.
“Gopalpur Port is expanding its capacity to 20 MT all-weather operations in this phase with an overall vision of 55 MT by 2025.
“Shapoorji Pallonji Groups’ port business will now operate on both sides of the Indian coast providing strategic logistical advantages to its customers,” Managing Director Amit Saboo said.
In 2017, the Pallonji Group became a majority shareholder in the port and undertook the Rs 2,000 crore expansion program.
Gopalpur Port is strategically located between Paradip and Vishakapatanam ports, positioning it uniquely for imports as well as coastal transportation of cargo on the east coast of India.
“The current expansion entails a total investment of Rs 2,000 crores and will contribute significantly towards the economic development of Orissa and Ganjam District in particular,” said Gopalpur Ports CEO Captain Sandeep Agarwal.
