Berhampur, October 8 (LocalWire): The state government has urged the centre to sanction three more District Disability Rehabilitation Centers (DDRC) and Early Childhood and Rehabilitation Centers (ECRC) in Odisha.
While the state presently has eight DDRCs functioning in the districts, it does not have any ECRC for children with mental disorders.
“The central government has plans of establishing 24 ECRCs across the country and had agreed to Odisha’s proposal of setting up two such centers in the state.
But we have demanded three ECRCs that can be set up establish in three revenue divisional headquarter towns of Berhampur, Cuttack, and Sambalpur,” Odisha minister for Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Ashok Chandra Panda said.
He also urged the Berhampur member of parliament Chandra Sekhar Sahu to mount pressure on the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for sanction of three ECCRCs and DDRCs for the state.
The minister also informed that he had put forth the demand during the Central Advisory Board Meeting on Disability meeting held at New Delhi, recently.
The meeting was convened by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and was presided over by its minister Thawar Chand Gehlot.
Presently the DDRCs are functioning in eight districts of the state, including Ganjam and Kandhamal.
The DDRCs conduct camps to identify persons with disabilities (PWD) and to assist them with supporting appliances.
The centers also cater to the medical needs of the PWDs, conducting surgery and have the facility for physiotherapy.
