Bhubaneswar, October 24 (Local Wire Bureau) A month after the Supreme Court directed States to make mandatory payment of minimum Rs 4 lakh as compensation to a rape survivor and Rs 5 lakh for gang-rape survivor, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik led Odisha government hiked the compensation amount for women victims of sexual assault and other crimes.
The victim’s family members will get Rs 5-10 lakh compensation in case of death while a rape survivor will be provided Rs 4-7 lakh, a state home department statement said.
Similarly, a gang-rape survivor will get Rs 5-10 lakh and in case of unnatural sexual assault, the victim will get Rs 4-7 lakh.
A victim losing her limb or part of the body due to assault resulting in 80% permanent disability or more will get Rs 2-5 lakh and in case of 40-80% disability, the compensation amount will be Rs 2-4 lakh. Compensation for 20-40% disability is up to Rs 3 lakh.
A victim with below 20% disability or grievous physical or mental injury is eligible for a compensation of Rs 1-2 lakh. In case of loss of fetus or miscarriage or loss of fertility due to assault, the victim will be provided Rs 2-3 lakh.
If rape leads to pregnancy, the victim will get Rs 3-4 lakh.
Compensation amount has also been revised for burn victims, it added.
A victim with a disfigured face will get Rs 7-8 lakh while the assistance for more than 50% injury is Rs 5-8 lakh. Victims with less than 50% injury will get Rs 3-5 lakh.
“If a woman victim of sexual assault/acid attack is covered under one or more category of the schedule, she will be entitled to be considered for a combined value of the compensation,” the notification said.
The state government has also made amendments to the Odisha Victim Compensation Scheme, 2017 and included mob violence and lynching in the category of crimes.
