Bhubaneswar, August 7 (LocalWire) Prominent politicians from the state paid homage to former External Affairs Minister and renowned face of Bharatiya Janata Party Sushma Swaraj on her shocking demise late Thursday night.
Offering his respect for the deceased politician, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said,” (I am) deeply saddened by the sudden demise of SushmaSwaraj ji.
She was a warm, respected and learned leader. She was known to take personal interest even in the smallest of people’s problem. Her departure has left a void in Indian politics. My heartfelt condolences to her family.”
Mrs Swaraj was declared dead in late Tuesday night after she was admitted at the AIIMS, Delhi for heart-related issues.
Her former colleague and Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Dharmendra Pradhan expressed deep shock at her untimely demise.
In an emotional tweet, Pradhan wrote, “Tough like iron and humane like a mother, Sushma ji was the force behind the tectonic shift behind India’s voice being effectively heard at global platforms, she truly epitomised the NariShakti of India.”
Swaraj’s another cabinet colleague, former tribal affairs minister Jual Oram described her as a legend and said, “no words can express the loss of a legend,” in a tweet.
She was a staunch admirer of Odia culture and heritage and often praised about the temples of the state. During her visit to Bhubaneswar in 2015 on India’s maritime trade strategy, she had urged the foreign nationals to visit the temples in the city to get acquainted with the state’s glorious past.
Former leader of BJP Odisha, Biswabhushan Harichandan, who is currently appointed as Governor for Andhra Pradesh also expressed his concerns over the sad news.
“Governor of Andhra Pradesh Biswa Busan Harichandan expressed deep shock and sadness at the sudden demise of former External Affairs Minister Smt.Sushma Swaraj. The Governor conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family,” said a tweet from Andhra Pradesh Raj Bhawan.
The last rites of Mrs. Swaraj were carried out in Delhi on Wednesday afternoon.
