Kendrapara, May 16 (LocalWire): Pratap Chandra Mohanty of Kendrapara has registered a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission over the death of a migrant labourer, hailing from Ganjam district, in Surat, Gujarat.
As per the complaint, the name of the deceased was Satya Swain, 35, originally from Baruda village in Bhanjanagar, Ganjam; the victim had been working in Gopinath Textiles in Anjani Industrial Area, Surat.
On May 14th 2020, many migrant labourers had gathered near a building to collect their train tickets in order to return to Odisha, when, the police beat up the gathered people to disperse the large crowd, according to the complaint.
Allegedly, the deceased was having tea in a stall along with his friend when he became aware of the incident, upon which he ran to his room.
The complaint cites that the police forcibly broke down the door and entered the building, and beat up the deceased and his friend; apparently, they were then taken to the police station, after which the victim was declared dead.
The victim is survived by his widow, a 7-year-old differently-abled child and hid old parents; the victim was the sole breadwinner of the family, stated the complainant.
The complainant has asked the commission to urge an independent enquiry into the incident, seeking reports from DGP and Chief Secretary of Gujarat within 4 weeks, and compensation of Rs.50 lakhs for the family of the deceased.
