Bhubaneswar, August 2 (LocalWire) The state government is planning to add at least 50 number of roadside amenities for tourists as Odisha witnessed a record rise in visitors last year.
In 2018, a total of 1.52 crore tourists visited key places of importance in the state out of which nearly half of them came from outside the state.
While domestic travel number was 60.83 lakh, up from 43.16 lakh in 2017, foreign visitors’ number also went up by around 50% to 1.1 lakh.
Keeping the rising tourist numbers in mind, the state has plans to raise wayside amenities centres to 93, by adding 50 such sites in the next five year.
This year, tenders to construct 10 such amenities at various locations have already been floated, according to recent infrastructure status report filed by the state works department.
There are already 43 numbers of wayside amenities operational at important touristic destinations of the state. These facilities have been developed under the public-private partnership mode.
Tourism is a key component of state GDP with 13% contribution.
To boost the state economy from tourism, there is a proposal to connect all 348 tourist destinations in the state by two-lane roads.
According to the infrastructure status report of state works department, all these beautiful places shall be connected with at least two-lane roads, so that tourism potential could be explored on a large scale.
“Route identification, survey and detail project reports for these roads are to start,” the report said.
