Bhubaneswar, Dec 2 (LocalWire): The crime branch cyber cell wing of Odisha Police unearthed an inter-state cyber fraud racket and arrested three people from Bihar.
Akash Kumar, Subham Priyadarshi and Kaushalendra Kumar were arrested from Hathidah police station area after they defrauded Om Prakash Mishra, a native of Bhuban in Dhenkanal district to the tune of Rs 40.45 lakhs earlier last year.
Rs 8.59 lakh cash, 47 ATM cards, laptops, mobile phones, SIM cards, bank account passbooks, cheque books, PAN card and Adhaar card were seized from their possession.
The trio had invited online applications for dealership of petroleum products after building a fictitious web portal in the name of a private oil company.
The unsuspecting complainant fell into their trap and transferred Rs 40.45 lakh in phases to the bank account number.
Mishra realized he had been taken for a ride as the web portal disappeared and there was no reply to his queries through email.
The mobile numbers of the trio were also found to be switched off. He then lodged a complaint with the cyber cell of the crime branch on 3 January.
‘A special squad comprising cyber experts was constituted and after almost a year-long investigation, we traced the criminals to Bihar.
With active support from our Bihar counterparts, they were arrested from different locations of Hathidah police station area of Bihar,’ said Santosh Kumar Upadhyay, Additional Director General of Police, Crime Branch.
They were forwarded to court today.
Investors have prayed for their remand for further investigation as there is every possibility that they might have duped many others by their inventive modus operandi, he added.
