Bhubaneswar, July 29 (LocalWire): The Directorate of Prisons in the state today said that a total of 16,789 prisoners from across the state have been released in the wake of the recent Supreme Court order.
This comes after a high power committee constituted by the apex court had recommended releasing the prisoners temporarily in the wake of COVID 19 threat.
“As per direction of Apex court and decisions of High powered committee of state, total of 16639 Under Trial Prisoners and 150 convicts have been released by court orders during the period of 20.3.2020 to 28.7.2020,” the statement from the Directorate of Prisoners and Correctional Services said.
The department said that the decision was taken by the High Powered Committee, the Under Trial Review Committees of 30 districts and other parties.
It also said that a total of 1202 prisoners have been shifted from overcrowded jails to less crowded jails so far.
