Bhubaneswar, September 27 (LocalWire): The state government today announced that the international standard high-performance centre to promote budding talents in badminton will be set up by December next year.
The Government of Odisha had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in June last year with Hyderabad-based Pullela Gopichand Badminton Foundation (PGBF) for establishing the centre in Bhubaneswar.
Sources disclosed that Dalmia Cements Bharat Limited (DCBL) has already agreed to support PGBF in setting up the badminton centre that will offer world-class training and coaching under the direct supervision of badminton legend and coach Gopichand.
The state government is planning to initiate construction for the centre by end of this year and complete the work by December 2020.
The badminton academy is slated to start functioning at the centre from December next year, chief minister Naveen Patnaik said.
He was attending a meeting to review the vision, design and roadmap for setting up the facility.
The state government has provided three-acre of land for the proposed centre.
The state is also constructing a multi-purpose indoor hall inside Kalinga Stadium Complex, which will be ready by February 2020, where the high-performance centre can start functioning immediately.
“Promotion of sports by industrial houses is a winning combination.
My government will always encourage such initiatives for the cause of sports in Odisha, the chief minister said.
