Bhubaneswar, Sept 30 (LocalWire): Iterating the government’s zero-tolerance stand towards drunken driving, Odisha transport minister Padmanava Behera, called for total prohibition of alcohol in the state.
‘There could be no leniency towards drunken driving. Police have arrested 426 drunk drivers so far since the implementation of the amended provisions of Motor Vehicles Act, 2019 from 1 September. Stringent legal action under Section 202 and 203 of the Act will be taken against drunken driving,’ Behera told a private TV channel.
‘Alcoholism is the root of all wrongdoings in Odisha. It’s under the influence of liquor that the majority of rape cases, a crime against women, murders are being committed,’ he said.
‘I believe there should be total prohibition in a poor state like Odisha. Alcohol is breaking up families and shattering the economic backbone of people living on the fringes,’ Behera added.
Reminiscing his bitter memory of alcoholism, he said ‘I have suffered a lot as my father was an alcoholic. My mother had to bear the brunt of his alcoholic nuisance.’
‘I have ventilated my grievance towards alcoholism to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and have sought for total prohibition. I along with Ranendra Pratap Swain had tabled a private Bill for total prohibition in the last Assembly,’ he concluded.
