Berhampur, April 25 (LocalWire): The district administration today foiled a child marriage at Kerandi village under Gajapati district’s Paralakhemundi police station after a lot of opposition from the villagers.
Acting on a tip off, officials of district child protection unit, Childline, the child development project officer, who is also the designated child marriage prohibition officer and police rushed to the house of the 17-year old girl’s house, whose marriage was fixed for Friday.
They tried to make the parents understand the law of the land that a minor could not be married off but they were adamant.
CPO Arun Kumar Tripathy, said ‘we later convinced the parents and they gave an undertaking not to marry their daughter till she attains the age of 18 years.’
But several villagers opposed their proposal. ‘They detained the officials for some hours opposing it.
Police had to intervene and rescue the officers,’ he said.
‘We will also convince the parents of the defence personnel, who was supposed to marry the minor.
As he is a government employee, we think, they will be convinced easily’ said Tripathy.
The CPO said with this incident, the district administration along with the activists and police had stopped at least eight child marriage in different areas of the district in the last four months.
