Bhubaneswar, Aug 20 (LocalWire): The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has taken suo moto action against media reports of a quack using acid to treat snake bite in Dhenkanal.
The human rights watchdog today issued notice to the Dhenkanal Collector and Superintendent of Police (SP) of the district on the matter and directed them to conduct an enquiry into the matter and submit the reports to the Commission within 15 days.
The matter pertains to a news item published in different newspapers on the use of acid by a quack on the victim of a snake bite in the district recently.
“From the newspaper reports, it appears that this type of treatment, though banned since long has been carried out in different parts of the state by the quacks, is nothing but a blind belief.
Snake Helpline workers have also raised their voice against such type of practice,” the OHRC order read.
It also said, “The Commission…is worried over the issue that blind belief and the sorcery/witchcraft which is continuing needs to stop. We are yet to know what action has been taken against such practice by the local police and district administration.”
