Bhubaneswar, July 2 (LocalWire): Have you ever wondered how the Smart City roadside and dividers from Chandrasekharpur to Niladrivihar, BDA remained green even during the scorching summers?
One has to thank Pabitra Kumar Panda, who single-handedly planted over thousands of trees across the capital city.
A native of Chandrasekharpur, Panda’s love for trees blossomed after his retirement in the year of 2001. He noticed that sans trees the city was getting warmer by the season and from that year onwards he set out on a mission to plant trees and seeds.
Residents of Chandrasekharpur to Niladrivihar, BDA, got used to witnessing Panda carry buckets full of water early morning, tend to old trees, plant new ones, water them, pick grass and add fertilizer too, to the untended plants alongside the road or on the dividers.
His daily routine was to wake up at dawn and head to tend the trees. ‘I simply get up and do my work without expecting from others to come to join me,’ said Panda.
He always wanted to do something for the country that he owed everything to and thought this was the best way to help which also motivated others to come and help him. He used his own resources and savings for the plantation drives.
‘Now with a team of like-minded people from Chandrasekharpur Kato area and Sunshine club members it is possible to plant more trees across the city,’ he added.
It surprises me when people appreciate any good deed but never step out to pitch in and to the efforts, he rued.
Panda said he hoped government would support his initiative in the future. The only way any major afforestation drive can sustain is if the Swach Seva Sangathan or any club or NGOs are instructed to water the plants.
