Berhampur, November 27 (LocalWire): In the third incident during a month, the wildlife officials on Wednesday arrested another bird poacher from near Chilika Lake and seized over 13 carcasses of migratory birds from him.
The accused, Parameswar Pradhan (20), is a resident of Ujjala Gopinathpur.
He was arrested from Abhimanpur under the Tangi wildlife range while transporting the carcasses on a motorcycle.
The dead birds were identified as Northen Pintails, Chilika Wildlife divisional forest officer (DFO) Alok Ranjan Hota said.
He further informed that the accused was caught by the wildlife wing while they were patrolling in the area.
“After conducting the post-mortem, the dead birds were buried,” he said, adding that they have also seized the motorcycle used by the accused.
With this, the wildlife personnel have registered three cases in less than a month, while as many as four poachers, including two fishermen, have been arrested by them.
On Monday, two fishermen were arrested from the restricted Nalabana bird sanctuary for fishing without permission.
The birds mostly from beyond the Himalayas in the Northern Eurasia, Caspian region, Siberia, Kazakh, Lake Baikal and the remote areas of Russia and neighboring countries visit the Chilika Lake every winter and start their homeward journey before the onset of summer.
Over two lakh birds have already descended in the lake and more are expected to reach in the coming days during this season.
According to the DFO, patrolling has been intensified in the lake area as the poachers are seen active in the lagoon during the season.
While 19 anti-poaching camps have been set up along the lake, two mobile camps have also been launched in the area to keep an eye on the poachers, he stated.
