Cuttack, Dec 5 (LocalWire): The Orissa High Court on Wednesday granted bail to journalist Abhijit Iyer Mitra in two cases lodged at Saheed Nagar police station and Konark police station respectively.
However, the court said the lower court can impose conditions while granting bail to Mitra, who has been under judicial custody at Jharpada jail for about 40 days for his alleged derogatory remarks on Konark Temple and Odisha legislators.
The Odisha government on Tuesday decided to drop all charges against Mitra, following the journalist’s letter to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to accept his apology.
Mitra was arrested on October 23 after two FIRs – one each in Konark and Bhubaneswar – were lodged against him for a sarcastic video and comments posted by him on Twitter where he allegedly criticized Odisha, its people, Lord Jagannath, Konark temple and state lawmakers.
The Odisha Assembly on Nov 17 had passed a motion to “forgive” Mitra.
He was admitted to Capital Hospital here on Sunday after he complained of stomach pain.
