Berhampur, Nov 1 (LocalWire): The Odisha state commission for protection of child rights (OSCPCR) awarded four districts for being proactive towards ensuring rights of children and adolescents.
Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal and Rayagada districts were awarded on the occasion of the ninth foundation day celebration of OSCPCR, organized in collaboration with the department of women and child development, department of labour, Unicef, Action Aid and Save the Children held at Bhubaneswar today.
Ganjam Collector Vijay Amruta Kulange and Kandhamal Collector Briundha D received the appreciation award from the minister of women and child development Tukuni Sahu.
The district child protection officers (DCPO) of Gajapati and Rayagada, Arun Kumar Tripathy and Ramesh Chandra Nayak respectively received the felicitations.
Ganjam district administration has taken initiatives like Nirbhaya Kadhi and Mo Gelha Jhia to ensure rights of children and adolescents.
‘The initiatives are to address issues of girls including stopping child marriages with the involvement of concerned officers and the people,’ said Ganjam Collector.
The Nirbhaya Kadhi, a monthly programme usually held on the third Saturday at the Anganwadi kendra, has been appreciated across the state as it makes an impact in reducing child marriages in the district.
It creates awareness among people about the prevailing laws that restricts them to marry off girls at a tender age.
Similarly, ‘Mo Gelha Jhia’ programme of the district proved successful in narrowing down the gap in the child sex ratio in the district.
Under the programme, the administration celebrates birthday of every girl born in the district.
Under the leadership of Gajapati Collector, Anupam Saha, the district administration had adopted children orphaned during cyclone Titli.
As many as 11 children had been adopted last year, said DCPO Gajapati.
Besides, they have also taken several measures for adoption, arrest of child trafficking and child marriages, he said.
Kandhamal and Rayagada districts have been awarded for arrest of child marriage.
