Jagatsinghpur, July 11(LocalWire): Discontentment is brewing among farmers after they were supplied with sub-standard paddy seeds by Odisha State Seed Corporation (OSSC).
Paddy is being cultivated on 86,220 hectares of land in Jagatsinghpur district and farmers procured hundreds of quintals of certified seeds from the agriculture department and OSSC to boost the bumper crop.
All their hopes of bumper crop were completely shattered due to non-germination of the paddy since they were supplied poor quality and sub-standard paddy seeds.
Though farmers were worried about deficit rainfall for the delay in paddy cultivation the month of July witnessed a favourable condition for sowing paddy due to frequent rainfall.
But the poor quality seeds have now added to the woes of thousands of farmers.
Locals farmers purchased different varieties of certified paddy seeds like Sarala , MTU 1075, Puja , swarna, Uphar and other varieties through cooperative societies and private dealers but these government-supplied certified seeds are not germinating while traditional seeds are germinating in Biridi, Kujang, Tirtol, Raghunathpur and other areas of Jagatsinghpur district.
Several irregularities in selection of paddy seeds by Odisha State Seed Certificate Agency (OSSCA), faulty method of processing, losing dormancy from paddy seeds, fungus on old stock seed are the main cause of non-germination of paddy seeds.
A farmer said ‘paddy seeds should be preserved in the month of April after processing and drying but they have been collected from farmers through OSSC in the month of February.
Early storage of paddy seeds at OSSC godown without drying leads to loss of dormancy and cause fungus to grow.’
Deputy Director, Agriculture, Ram Chandra Nayak, said, ‘the department has received allegations for non-germination of paddy seeds and the district agriculture officer, Jagatsinghpur, has been asked to conduct an inquiry to ascertain the cause for non-germination of paddy seeds.
About5400 quintal of different varieties of paddy seeds was supplied by OSSC in this district’.
