Berhampur, Jan 3 (LocalWire) Ganjam district unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday staged a demonstration in front of the collector’s office at Chhatrapur alleging the distress sale of paddy in the district and demanded to procure all paddy from farmers.
In a memorandum addressed to Odisha governor Gameshi Lal, they also demanded for write off all crop loans from the farmers.
The agitators carried paddy bags in a bullock-cart to the demonstration site.
BJP’s state secretary Bibhuti Jena said the government opened a few mandis (procurement centres) in the last week of December. But due to late opening of these centres, farmers were forced to sale their products to businessmen from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh at a distress rate.
Party’s district president Kanhu Charan Pati said farmers in the district had suffered due to unseasonal rains under the influence of cyclones Titli and Phethai.
“The paddy have been discoloured. The state government should purchase all paddy at the rate of Rs 1750 per quintal, the minimum support price fixed by the central government,” said Pati.
He alleged actual procurement was not done in the district.
“It was only done by some officers in pen and papers,” he said.
