Berhampur, Dec 19 (LocalWire): The food supply and consumer welfare and cooperative minister Ranendra Pratap Swain today claimed that state agencies purchased around 11 million quintal paddy in the current Kharif marketing season which was 46 percent higher than the corresponding period last year.
Swain was here to review the functioning of Central Cooperative Banks of Aska, Berhampur and Koraput.
He directed the primary agriculture cooperative societies to streamline the paddy procurement in their respective areas without harassing the farmers.
Paddy procurement was gaining momentum in the state due to the introduction of the centralized token system, which benefitted the small and marginal farmers, the minister said.
The government targeted to procure 60 lakh metric tonnes of paddy (around 41 lakh MT in terms of rice) from the farmers during the Kharif marketing season through different agencies.
Procurement of paddy started from November and will continue till March 2020.
Swain reiterated that farmers received the payment for paddy online within 24 hours of selling it.
He also said that procurement would start in all districts by the first week of January.
He also focused on the newly-introduced agriculture policy ‘Samridhi’ which aims to increase the farmers’ income.
He asked the primary agriculture cooperative societies to sensitize the farmers about the new agriculture policy 2020 and asked them to adopt technology to enhance productivity.
The state Cabinet on Tuesday had approved the new agriculture policy 2020 Samridhi to ensure sustainable growth in farmers’ income.
