Bhubaneswar, June 14 (LocalWire): People’s Cultural Centre, a leading voluntary organization from the state, was granted Special Consultative Status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council during its coordination and management meeting held last week.
PECUC was initiated in late 1980s by a group of social activists, professionals from different backgrounds, artists and National Service Scheme volunteers to help children of different slums and villages from the outskirts of the capital.
They also provided a platform to these children to explore their potential.
In 1990, PECUC became a legal entity that worked towards empowering the weaker section of the society.
A consultative status for an organisation enables it to actively engage with the ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies, as well as with the United Nations Secretariat, programmes and agencies in several ways.
Consultative relationship with NGOs also enables the Council or one of its bodies to seek expert information or advice from organisations with special competence in a subject matter.
