Berhampur, Jan 9 (LocalWire): Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) on Wednesday seized huge quantity of polythene bags, water pouches and collected fine around Rs 7000 conducting raids on shops near MKCG Medical College area here.
With this the enforcement wing of the civic body has seized around 400 kg of plastic and polythene materials in the last two months, said BeMC commissioner Chakravarti Singh Rathore.
The corporation has also collected fine over Rs 2.05 lakh during this period and sealed at least a dozen of shops.
The seized shops were allowed to reopen after their owners furnished affidavit with the civic body assuring not to use such banned materials in future, he added.
The state government has imposed ban on stock, manufacture and use of plastic and its derivatives like polythene from October 2 in five corporation areas, including BeMC and Puri Municipality.
The enforcement wing started conducting raids from November 1.
The raids are being conducted with an aim to make Silk City a “plastic-free city”, said the commissioner.
Meanwhile the BeMC has increased the fine amount upto Rs 50,000 from January 1 that was upto Rs 5,000 before for violating the ban.
“As upto Rs 5000 is considered as a small amount for the major commercial establishments in the city, we hiked the fine amount upto Rs 50,000” said Rathore.
