Bhubaneswar, Jan 21(Local Wire): Odisha is now all set to host the maiden Khelo India University India games of the country from its soil.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the mega event through video conferencing on Saturday.
He is also expected to address the gathering in the state from New Delhi.
On the other hand, Union Minister of State for Sports and Youths Affairs Kiren Rijiju will be taking part in the event from Cuttack.
The event is kick starting from February 22.
The event has been planned to be a conglomeration of multi-sports events under one roof.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and other sportspersons and teams from across the country will be participating for this event.
According to the sports ministry a total of 3400 athletes from 159 universities will take part in the event.
“As many as 3400 athletes from 159 universities across the country have been given entries in 17 disciplines, including Rugby which is among the six team events.
Athletes are looking at the Khelo India University Games to make a mark not only for their institutions and themselves but also to catch the eye of talent scouts,” the sports ministry said in a statement.
According to the organizers, there will be a total of 17 sports in the event namely archery, athletics, boxing, fencing, judo, swimming, weightlifting, wrestling, badminton, basketball, football, hockey, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, rugby and kabaddi.
