Berhampur, Dec 15 (LocalWire): Wildlife personnel have arrested five people in the last two days for killing migratory birds in world-famous Chilika lake, officials said on Sunday.
The Tangi wildlife range officials have seized as many as 64 dead birds of various species from them.
Besides carcasses of bullet-ridden birds, wildlife personnel also seized a motorboat, a country-made air-gun, 500 cartridges, gunpowder and a knife from the arrested people, divisional forest officer Alok Ranjan Hota said.
Bullet-ridden carcasses of 25 Northern Pintails, 12 Northern Solvers, 18 large Whistling Teal, eight Rails or marsh birds and a pheasant-tailed Jacana were found in their possession.
Hota said patrolling forest staffs were attacked with sharp weapons when they tried to stop the poachers in a speedboat.
Forest official Radhakanta Hota and three other staff despite injuries managed to overpower the poachers and arrested them.
Five others managed to escape. Police have registered a first information report at Tangi police station against the poachers for attacking the staffs.
