Berhampur, July 2 (LocalWire): BJD today retained the Ganjam Zilla Parishad president post after the by-election. Sonam Polai, BJD’s ZP member of zone 11 in Khallikote block was elected unopposed as president of the apex rural body in the district.
The post was lying vacant after Subash Behera was elected to the state Assembly and subsequently resigned as ZP president.
‘I am very grateful to the party supremo and chief minister Naveen Patnaik for selecting me for this prestigious post,’ Polai said after being elected.
Polai’s name was declared before the election and recommended by the chief minister.
MLA (Gopalpur) and BJD’s Ganjam district president Pradeep Panigrahy declared her name after opening an envelope in the presence of several party MLAs of the district as well as the ZP members.
Election of Polai was easy as the ruling regional party has absolute majority in the 69-member parishad.
Presently, the ruling BJD has 64 out of 69-members followed by BJP (4) and Congress (one).
