Berhampur, October 2 (LocalWire): As many as 29 persons, including 22 women have been arrested by the police on Tuesday for allegedly breaking the teeth and forcing six persons to consume human excreta.
The incident happened at Gopapur under Ganjam district’s Khallikote police station limits and most of the victims are over 70 years.
They were first admitted to the local hospital and then shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital where their condition is stated to be good, medical sources said.
A group of people had attacked the six persons suspecting them of practicing witchcraft in the village and killing at least three women.
The group also alleged that several villagers had fallen ill during the last few days due to witchcraft.
According to Ganjam superintendent of police Brijesh Rai, the police will arrest more people who were involved in the attack.
“We have the names of other accused persons and they will be nabbed soon,” he said.
While the police have been trying to convince the local people against sorcery, such incidents continue to happen forcing the police to take action against the accused persons.
According to sources, at least three women of the village had died in the last four months.
At least four other women had fallen ill in the last week and had to be admitted to the hospital.
The police detected that they were suffering from anemia, but the family members of the sick women suspected that their illness was caused due to witchcraft.
Suspecting it the villagers allegedly attacked the six persons, police said.
