Bolangir, Dec 4 (LocalWire) Police have rescued 12 labourers from Kantabanji area of Balangir district while they were being taken to Hyderabad, and arrested a man who was sending them, officials said on Wednesday.
The man arrested has been identified as Bharat Kumbar, a native of Kharlipathar village under Belpada block. He was not having the required permission to send the labourers, local police inspector B.N.Karkara said.
Police have registered a case against him under several sections of Indian Penal code and for violating Inter-State Migrant Workmen (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, he added.
A large number of people including women and children mostly from state’s western districts travel to neighbouring states to work in different factories and brick kilns for paltry remuneration.
Some of them are taken by middlemen forcibly. The workers are more often subjected torture by the employers, a social activist said.
