Berhampur, Dec 18 (LocalWire): Police today seized nine sand-laden tractors and arrested its drivers while continuing to crackdown on illegal sand mining from Rushikulya river bed at Jeypur under Ganjam district’s Aska police station limits. Four others managed to escape.
‘We have identified the people who escaped,’ said inspector in charge, Aska police station, PK Sahoo.
He added that the men claim to be lease holders who have the right to extract sand from the river bed whereas no one has been leased out any land in the area.
Acting on a tip off, the police conducted raids in Jeypur and the vehicle owners could not show any document which allowed them to transport sand.
‘During interrogation one of the arrested tractor drivers disclosed that they were lifting sand from the area for some years without any document,’ Sahoo said.
‘It’s clearly theft of minor mineral (sand) where the government exchequer incurred a loss,’ he added.
‘We have registered a case against these mafias under different sections of IPC and the Odisha mineral (Prevention of theft, trading and transportation etc) rule and search is on to arrest them,’ added Sahoo.
