Berhampur, December 29 (LocalWire) Police on Sunday arrested five persons including two hired killers in connection with the murder of a RTI activist at Baliguda in Kandhamal district 19 days ago, an official said today.
58-year-old Abhimanyu Panda, native of Bataguda village in Baliguda town under Kandhamal district, was gunned down by two masked assailants from close range on December 10.
RTI activists across the State had expressed deep concern over the whistleblower’s killing.
Panda might have unmasked corrupt practices through RTI activism.
But his murder was in no way linked with whistle blowing, said Kandhamal Superintendent of Police, Pratek Singh.
The murder was executed with the motive to settle an old score.
The mastermind of the crime, K. BIswajit Patra had hired two supari killers to eliminate Panda.
Patra had developed deep animosity towards Panda over the issues related to the management of a temple and allotment of shop.
Patra had hired the two killers paying them Rs 1 lakh supari he said.
Special squads constituted the purpose cracked the crime and arrested the culprits. Two others involved in the crime are still at large.
Manhunt is on to nab them at the earliest. The arrested persons booked under relevant IPC sections including 302 (murder) were later remanded to judicial custody, he concluded.
