Bhubaneswar, Oct 18 (LocalWire): Police today arrested 50 unlicensed labour contractors from Nabarangpur, Rayagada and Kalahandi districts and booked them under Section 370,417 and 120 (B) of Indian Penal Code.
They were later remanded to judicial custody, Director-General of Police tweeted in his official Twitter handle.
The drive to check distress migration will continue. Special task forces have been constituted to arrest labour agents involved in distress migration, he said.
With abysmal lack of employment opportunities, people from backward belts of the districts migrate to neighbouring states in search of bread and butter. In the process, these defenceless people are ensnared in bondage labour system and fall prey to exploitative practice by tyrannical employers.
According to officials in the state labour directorate, 11 districts, namely, Bolangir, Bargarh, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Subrnapur, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Nabarangpur and Khordha have been identified as migration prone zones.
While government puts distress migration figures at 1.30 lakh, the actual figure could go up ten-fold.
