Berhampur, Sept 9 (LocalWire): Officials of Aska police station today seized a huge quantity of explosives and fire crackers during a crackdown on illegal firecracker manufacturing units at Nalabanta in Ganjam district. Three people were arrested while others fled.
Nalabanta, about 35 kms from here is known as Sivakasi of Odisha for the firecracker manufacturing units.
The units mushroom about two months before Dussehra and Diwali.
Besides catering to the local markets in Ganjam, the village also supplies firecrackers to other neighbouring states.
‘We seized around seven truckloads of fire crackers and explosives from different units in the village,’ said inspector in charge, Aska police station, PK Sahoo. The seized items were worth around Rs 10 lakhs, he said.
The manufacturers do not have any license to manufacture crackers.
Acting on a tip off, a police team conducted raids in the village and seized the stuff.
Over a dozen illegal firework-manufacturing units were detected during the raid. The raids will continue till Diwali, Sahoo said.
