Berhampur, May 30 (Localwire): A bid to marry off a 16-year-old girl at Chandragiri has been foiled with a timely intervention of the Gajapati district administration, an official said on Thursday.
Acting on a tip off, officials of district child protection unit rushed to the girl’s house and stopped the wedding plans. The marriage was to be solemnized on Friday.
“The officials convinced the girl’s parents that it’s illegal to marry off their daughter at a tender age,” said child protection officer Arun Kumar Tripathy.
“Initially they were reluctant but later they agreed to marry her off when she becomes 18 years old.
The groom’s parents have also agreed to their suggestion,” Tripathy added.
The groom owns a mobile repair shop and his family hails from Gobindapur.
Childline district unit head Sudhir Sabat said they received a call on their toll-free number about the marriage and immediately its volunteers alerted the concerned officers.
Tripathy said the district administration along with Childline activists and police have stopped at least a dozen child marriage in different parts of Gajapati in last five months.
