Berhampur, March 30 (LocalWire): Police have registered a case against Hinjili BJP candidate Pitambar Acharya for allegedly threatening security personnel on election duty.
According to police, Acharya had threatened the officers of a flying squad when they stopped his vehicle at a checkpoint near the Pitala College square on Friday.
“We have registered a case against Acharya on the basis of a FIR lodged by assistant agriculture officer Pitala Biswanath Behera, who was on a flying squad duty,” Aska police station in-charge Pitabas Dharua said.
Before joining active politics, Acharya was a senior high court advocate.
“Although I introduced myself, they refused to take heed and continued their search. I was in a hurry, considering the limited time left for electioneering. It’s nothing but harassment,” claimed Acharya.
His supporters, though, said BJD was trying to harass Acharya by registering a police case against him.
“The ruling party is afraid after Acharya’s nomination from Hinjili. BJD is trying to restrict his movement in Hinjili, as he has raised questions against the CM,” BJP district president Kanhu Charan Pati said.
Reacting to the incident, BJD’s district president Pradeep Panigrahy said police were doing their duty.
