Berhampur, April 9 (LocalWire): Police recovered two powerful improvised explosive devices from a culvert near Jhiliki in Gajapati-Kandhamal border area under the Adava police station on Tuesday and foiled an attack by suspected Maoists ahead of the elections.
Bomb disposal squad from Paralakhemundi rushed to the spot and defused the landmines weighing around 25 kg each with fresh wires and detonators, said SP (Gajapati) Sarah Sharma.
Police suspected the Maoists might have wanted to blow off the culvert or maybe attack any politician or force and therefore, did not allow any polling party to go to their respective booths under Adava, Mohana and R Udayagiri police stations limits in Mohana Assembly constituency.
The polling parties were supposed to reach the booths by Tuesday evening, as the constituency is going to poll on Thursday.
She said search operation was going on and security had been tightened. ‘We have ordered a thorough search in these Maoist-affected areas. Only after being sure of the area being safe, will we allow polling parties to go to their respective booths,’ Sharma said. The CPI (Maoist) has called to boycott the elections.
Several Maoist posters had surfaced in different areas of Kandhamal district earlier.
