Berhampur, August 12 (LocalWire): The police have decided to freeze the bank accounts of the accused who were recently arrested on charges of illegally running gutkha manufacturing units here.
“We have already asked the banks to freeze the accounts of the accused persons,” Berhampur Sadara sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Jayant Kumar Mohapatra said, adding that several other persons, mainly the owners of some of the manufacturing units were still absconding and effort was on to nab them.
As many as 12 persons involved in manufacturing of gutkha have been arrested from Berhampur and its adjoining villages during the last one week, while police unearthed six illegal manufacturing units.
Gutkha, raw materials, and equipment like packing and mixture machines worth Rs one crore have been seized from the units.
The illegally run units have been sized from Bhairab Nagara, Borigaon, Bhutapalli under Berhampur Sadara police station limits, Panigrahy Pentha and Sarguna Street under Berhampur Bada Bazaar police station limits.
Despite the ban imposed by the government manufacturing, stocking, and transportation of gutkha from 2013, several traders in Berhampur were involved in the lucrative business.
About three years ago, police had unearthed several gutkha manufacturing units around Berhampur.
Berhampur is one of the major places in the state for manufacturing of gutkha. Besides catering to the needs in the state, the traders also supply it to other states, including Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, and New Delhi.
Police said they would continue to conduct raids in the illegally run manufacturing units during the coming days.
Keeping in view of the police action, several manufacturers in the city have already shut their units, while some others are absconding fearing police action, the police claimed.
