Berhampur, March 28 (LocalWire): Many political veterans have kept themselves away from the poll arena this time, either due to ill-health, denial of ticket, or consciously making way for new generation.
In Ganjam, heavyweights like V. Sugnan Kumari Deo, Ram Chandra Rath, Chintamani Dyansamantara, Raghaba Parida, Nityanand Pradhan and Rama Krushna Patnaik have been absent from the battleground.
Others who kept themselves away from polls include U.N. Deb, Duti Krushna Panda, Ramesh Chaupatnaik and Debaraj Mohanty Sugnan.
While Rath was a three-time MP from Aska, Dyansamantara had won the Chikiti assembly seat three times and Nityananda had been an MLA and MP from Kabisurya Nagara and Aska respectively.
Patnaik had been two-time MP from Aska. He had also served as MLA and cabinet minister.
His daughter Anita Priayadarshini is contesting from Aska parliamentary seat in a BJP ticket this time.
Chaupatnaik was elected five times from Berhampur. However, he was denied a BJD ticket this time.
Seventy-six year-old, though, said he will work for BJD’s victory in the election.
Three-time Aska MLA Debaraj Mohanty was denied a BJD ticket this time.
Though he had joined BJP, the saffron party too denied him a ticket. The 66-year-old has now decided to keep away from polls.
Former minister Raghab has announced retirement from politics. He had been MLA for two times.
Debaraj Mohanty Sugnan, the scion of Khallikote royal family, was elected 10 times to the assembly from Khallikote and Kabisurya Nagara seats.
He was denied a ticket this time.
Also, three-time MLA from Mohana, U.N. Deb has kept himself away due to old age.
