Jagatsinghpur, September 11 (LocalWire): Unable to feed her old in-laws and daughter, as well pay back the loan she had taken for the treatment of her husband, a woman from Pokamola under Naugaon police limit jumped into the Devi river along with her seventh-month-old daughter, Tuesday night.
While the ODRAF and Firefighter teams were pressed into service to rescue the woman and her child, they have so far failed to trace the two.
Sources said that the woman Lipina Rout lived with her 75-years old father-in-law, mother-in-law, husband, and seven-month-old daughter.
She had borrowed over a lakh of rupees from neighbours towards the stomach operation of her husband. The family was living in abject poverty since they had exhausted all the money and had nothing for sustenance.
The family was also denied the 20-kg rice that they were entitled to under the National Food Security Act due to non-linkage of Aadhaar number with their ration card.
According to reports, the woman along with her father-in-law and daughter had met the local sarpanch and Naugaon BDO for linkage of Aadhaar number with ration card but failed because of non-availability of Aaadhar card of all family members.
Besides, the family was also driven to the dire situation since the 75-years old father-in-law Bhagu Rout and her mother-in-law did not receive the old-age pension and housing facilities under different state government and union government housing scheme.
While her husband Arakhit Rout had started to work in a private company in Gujarat after recovering from his ailment, the family was forced to live in a dilapidated and broken asbestos house due to financial stress.
According to neighbours, Lipina was mentally disturbed due to acute poverty and non-supply of PDS commodities due to the Aadhar number linkage issue. All of these had forced her to commit suicide.
The sarpanch Narottam Kandi has confirmed that the 75-year-old father-in-law had applied for old age pension but is not to receive any pension.
“No housing scheme has yet given to this family and they are living in a dilapidated house. Even, PDS dealer had been stopped the supply of 20 kg rice since last month due to non-linkage of Aaadhaar and ration card. The family members were living in acute financial crisis,” he said.
According to Naugaon police station inspector-in-charge Prangya Kar, the police are yet to confirm the suicide of the woman who allegedly jumped into the river along with her daughter because of there is no eye witness.
Meanwhile, the ODRAF team was been again pressed into the service today morning to find the two, she said.
