Paradip, Jan 3 (LocalWire) Paradip Port Trust (PPT) on Thursday announced the commencement of dredging operations at Mahanadi river mouth to avert siltation for smooth navigation of seaward fishing vessels.
PPT chairman Rinkesh Roy said the work will be carried out at an estimated cost of Rs. 15 cr through a dredging firm, M/s Reach Dredging Limited, Kolkata.
It may be noted that a major fishery harbour is operational at Paradip located in the right bank of Mahanadi about 1km upstream of the river mouth.
The fishery harbour is presently managed by the Odisha government’s Fisheries & Animal Resources Development Department.
Local fishing community IS facing difficulties as the river mouth has been silted up over the years and the fishing vessels cannot navigate smoothly during approach/exit from the fishery harbour.
The Mahanadi river mouth was last dredged almost 20 years back.
During his interaction with the press, Roy informed there is a narrow window period between January and February to complete the work smoothly in tranquil conditions.
PPT targets to complete the work by February.
The Ministry of Shipping has approved implementation of the above dredging work through the internal resources of the p
ort. It is hoped that the long lasting woes of local fishing community over a period of almost two decades will finally see the light of the day due to the PPT initiative.
