Bhubaneswar, Dec 18 (LocalWire) Peer leaders or ‘Pragati sathis’, who have given the socially smart project of Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) a new momentum, shared their experience at a unique gathering today.
The peer leaders or grassroots-level agents helped implement the socially smart project in eight slums, where the project was initiated in 2017.
While describing their stories of transformation at the Centre for Youth and Social Development (CYSD) here, the pragati sathis became emotional and told the audience that the Socially Smart Project of BSCL gave them an identity.
They narrated how they shaped a new social order in the slums and and how they are motivating people to change for the good.
The young boys and girls of different slums are being trained as peer leaders and undergoing nine-day training in three phases.
Thereafter, they involve young boys and girls from the slums who meet every fortnight to discuss issues and challenges faced by them and also followed up the modules shared with them.
In the last three years, the peer leaders have shown exemplary leadership skills and taken up varied issues including repair or installation of street lights, cleanliness in slums, cleaning of drains, bringing children back to school, linking youths with skill training programs, creating awareness on gender-based violence at community level, taking steps to stop open sale of liquor and drugs in their area and issues of eve teasing.
35 peer leaders were felicitated by BSCL for supporting the community both during and after Fani.
